Day 1 Summary

GLOBSEC Talk: The EU in a Global Crisis of Leadership
The world is facing various challenges; inequality, digital revolution, climate change, the rise and influence of private companies, multipolarity, and multidimensional competition.
“This is the first period when human kind is threating life on its own planet”.
The crisis we are in today should be dealt with through long-term strategy, where the EU should play a major role.
“The more powerful foreign actor the EU is being, the less effective it is, because it is internally and externally divided.”
The EU is not an option, rather a necessity. The Russia we have today is the product from what happened in 1989. The China of today is as much of product of 4/6/1982. Britain has lost its empire, but has not found its role yet.
We need the EU to defend our values, interests and shared way of life; we need it for ourselves in Europe to explain to next generation what the EU is for. Europe needs to discover its new story.
16:45 – 17:45
GLOBSEC Chat: The Spirit of Sibiu
The Romanian presidency faced several challenges, mainly resulting from Brexit, whether it was the change of the time or issues discussed. However, the Sibiu summit resulted in important conclusions that brought back the fundamental mission of the EU – convergence and prosperity in Europe. The EU should focus not only on its soft power, but also on what it does in its closest and wider neighbourhood. It should promote the Sibiu “spirit of community and spirit of solidarity.”
“The main message of the Romanian presidency is obvious – to bring back the political cohesion on the top of the agenda, “because cohesion means solidarity, means unity and that we stand together against discrimination”.”
